Here´s the story why Airbus called the A380 that way:

A350 seemed not too far away from the A340 (in a technological sense - a point I don´t understand)

A360 has another meaning in aviation, as you might know (would be indeed no good name for an aircraft)

A370 wasn´t supposed to be a good name because of asian customers (the 7 is a bad number or something like that)

So it went to A380 - that´s all.

The upper deck is the same layout as an A340 on paper.
