Air New Zealand introduces new livery

23 Jul 2012

Air New Zealand is introducing a new livery, complete with a fresh lettering style and a move away from blue and green tones on aircraft tails.

While its iconic symbol, the Koru, will remain, it will be set on a black tail.
The carrier will also be introducing a new lettering on its livery, modernising it, says its chief executive Rob Fyfe.

The changes will be made on all new aircraft entering its fleet.

Black has resonated well with our customers and staff who identify with it as the colour of New Zealand and a natural choice for our national airline. It inspires pride, is part of our Kiwi identity and a symbol of Kiwi success on the world stage," says Fyfe.

The carrier started using black as its corporate colour ahead of its All Blacks' campaign last year, where it sponsored the New Zealand Rugby Union and the All Blacks team.

Its newest Boeing 777-300ER, registration ZK-OKQ, delivered in January, was also painted in a black colour scheme.

Unless that aircraft is a nice pearl white colour like Virgin Atlantic, we have just witnessed the birth of another euro-white livery. Great.

First it was the Pacific Wave (some of their aircraft are still sporting the Pacific Wave though), now they are changing the colour from teal to black. I'm going to miss the teal coloured theme after this..

I donnot like the only black taill.. Just like the livery with the "Pacific Wave".. Glad to have the B744 in that livery and the upcoming B773 "All Blacks"..

Such a beautiful Country of so much colour, culture, and wonder and this is how they represent it? Not impressed. I miss the wave!

Thanks for the posting. I'm sad to see such a new scheme, especially compared to the Hasegawa 747-400 kit I have with the older two-stripe scheme applied. I do not understand how Air New Zealand can say that just one color resonates well with customers. What happened to the beautiful two stripe scheme and tail they once had back in the 1970s and 1980s? The same can be asked of many other airline schemes that go with an all white fuselage and basic titles. I can understand cost, however it seems that the once colorful schemes of back then are disappearing more and more and were more colorful then today's schemes. I hope the airline does well though.

Its sad to see the beautiful blue/green go but I suspected they were phasing out their more colouful livery when their 777-300ERs came and were missing the pacific wave...

Personally I think they totally took a step backwards with this scheme. Looks so generic and dull! The teal must gotten expense is that why they went black? I guess like they say once you had black you won't go back!

The iconic era of having cheatlines has finally gone, and has been replace with boring, emotionless euro-white!! As aviation cost continue to soar airlines are having to look at ways to cut back on costs including their idenities!

Well that photo sure doesn't help!

I know it's computer generated, but did they deliberately make sure that the photo was washed out and overexposed, even if that was blue on the tail it would still look like that. It almost seems like they are trying to hide the crapiness of this new livery.

It doesn't seem that different, but no colour so definitely worse. It's bad enough they got rid of the "Maori" (I think thats what it is ) leaves on the fuselage.

I wrote my university dissertation on the stagnation of innovation and creativity in airline branding and livery design. This livery epitomises the complete lack of artistic skill and talent prevailant in modern culture where the cheap and cost effective alternative is passed of as being 'chic' and elegant. Overall, poor, uncreative, overused, unrecognisable and boring.
