Now im sure security will be beefed up yet again due to some irresponsible people, bad news for spotters i guess. :\

Sounds like he was attempting to take-off and crash into something or someone. I guess in the end he didn't have the guts to do it.

i don't see any sign that he was wanting to crash into something, necessarily. it could also have been an ill-considered attempt to flee the country.

either way, a sane person will have trouble imagining what was happening in his mind.

In regards to the incident, the following thoughts popped into my mind:

- Skywest made the correct decision to place this pilot on administrative leave. The safety of passangers is paramount, and by grounding the pilot in this manner, should he have been found not guilty, he would have not lost pay or seniority status. This pilot was, in retrospect, already in a unstable state of mind, but kudos to the company for taking action despite risking potential bad press from the pilots association and the individual.

- The difficulty in securing far-flung areas of an airport has now been brought to light. In particular, small airports that do not have 24 hour opperations are open to airside intrusion.

- As it is the political season in the US, there will be some Congressman who takes the issue and runs with it, demanding more intense security. Expect spotters/photographers to have to deal with more harrassment and questioning by security forces pressured to "show results." Keep your ID handy (a passport if you have one tends to work better).
