Press Release SOURCE: Southwest Airlines Southwest Airlines Revs Growth Plan Engines With New Service Carrier to Accept Delivery of Two Previously Deferred Aircraft DALLAS, Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwest Airlines announced plans today to accept delivery of two aircraft and resume its growth, which has been in a holding pattern since Sept. 11, 2001. The airline deferred delivery of 19 aircraft as part of its plan to stabilize cash flow and put its growth plans on hold after this fall's terrorist attacks. Southwest executives say the airline is still in the process of recovering from the events of Sept. 11, but they feel the airline's performance has been strong enough to add a handful of flights to its schedule. "Southwest Airlines began inviting Customers to fly again by offering aggressive fare sales in September and October," said Jim Parker, Southwest's CEO and vice chairman of the board. "Although our load factors continue to lag year-ago levels, we have been very gratified by the great support from our loyal Customers. As a consequence, we feel it appropriate to cautiously resume our growth with these new aircraft, beginning Feb. 4." Southwest will use the aircraft to supplement its service between several key cities beginning February 4. This increased nonstop service will be available for sale today at southwest.com or by calling (800) I FLY SWA. The airline will add one new nonstop flight between the following cities:
The Internet-only fares are on sale until Dec. 27, 2001, for travel through the end of Southwest's open schedule (currently June 7, 2002). The following additional restrictions apply. Fares are one-way and available only on southwest.com . Fares are combinable with all other fares, and the most restrictive fare's rules apply. Tickets must be purchased at least seven days before departure and within one day of making reservations. Fares do not include airport-assessed passenger facility charges up to $9 one-way and a federal tax of up to $3 per takeoff and landing. Tickets are nonrefundable but (except for tickets purchased through our Group Tickets program) may be applied toward the purchase of future travel on Southwest Airlines. Seats are limited and may not be available on some flights that operate during peak or holiday travel times, such as Christmas, New Year's, President's Day, or Memorial Day. Fares are subject to change until ticketed, and any change in itinerary could result in an increase in the fare. Fares are not necessarily common rated in the Bay Area or the Los Angeles Basin area. Orange County's John Wayne Airport and Houston's Intercontinental Airport are not included in these sales. Southwest Airlines, the nation's premier low-fare airline, is the nation's fourth largest domestic carrier in terms of Customers carried. The airline serves 58 cities in 30 states and operates more than 2,700 flights a day. http://www.southwest.com SOURCE: Southwest Airlines |

It is these type of "sudden announcements" that Crew Planning (crews) and Schedule Planning (aircraft) departments just Luv (they actually had a few days heads up).
As if Southwest's schedule isn't complicated enough (referred to by IBM as the world's most complicated math problem), factoring in minor additions such as this is always a challenge... and takes some time... and some overtime.
