Los Angeles airport reinstates curbside service
December 14, 2001 Posted: 4:41 PM EST (2141 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Los Angeles International Airport will re-open the curbside drop-off and pick-up of passengers beginning Saturday, Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn said.

The airport had imposed a ban on all auto traffic with the exception of shuttle and taxi service in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The airport was the scheduled destination of three of the four planes that crashed on September 11.

Hahn warned motorists that the airport is, however, instituting a "zero tolerance policy" with respect to unattended vehicles and said that anyone leaving a vehicle at curbside would face stiff fines and immediate towing.

I think that the FAA relaxed the rules about curbside checkin back in October. If I remember correctly, each airport had to come up with some sort of security plan and have it approved and implimented before allowing this to resume. Curbside resumed here in Charlotte about 4 days after it was announced that this would be allowed.

I think what they mean by "curbside service" is the ability to pick up and drop off passengers at the curb. They may also have reinstituted curb side check in of luggage as well with the stricter baggage rules.

Previous to the relaxation of this policy at LAX you could only pick up and drop off passengers from private vehicles inside the parking garages. The passengers would then have to hoof it across the street to the terminal opposite to check-in. You can imagine what a pain this was for senior citizens who had trouble managing their luggage. Only passengers from public transport or taxis could be dropped off or picked up directly at the curb. If you really want to know about curbside check in I'll write back around Christmas as I'm visiting LAX unfortunately.
