LONDON (Reuters) -- British budget airline Go said on Thursday it would fly from East Midlands Airport (EMA) from next May and expected to carry 500,000 passengers in the first year. While routes will not be announced until January, chief executive Barbara Cassani said: "A weekend break in Europe's finest cities can now be enjoyed by millions more people." The move will see 25 extra ground staff jobs at fast-growing EMA, which has the only intercontinental runway between London and Manchester. A Go spokesman said it was in talks with local agencies to see whether flight crews might be based at the airport. EMA chairman Brian Harrison said Go's arrival was a major coup at a difficult time for the travel industry. He said it would also help "thousands of passengers seeking low-cost services forced to drive past EMA's doors" to reach airports in congested southeast England. Most budget airline flights to continental Europe depart from Luton or Stansted airports, both about 50 km from London, north and northeast respectively. EMA is around 170 km north of the capital. Lying between the cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham and near the M1 motorway which runs north-south along England's spine, EMA has 12 million people living within 90 minutes drive. Aside from the benefits for Go and EMA, Harrison said it was also a big step forward for the area. "We have seen the huge benefits which low-cost airlines have brought to other regions," he said.
