Midway Airlines to resume six East Coast flights
Tue 04:14 PM CHICAGO, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Midway Airlines Inc. Midway received $10.1 million in cash grants from the federal government as part of the $15 billion bailout package approved after the airplane attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. The airline, based in Morrisville, North Carolina, suspended all flights and cut 1,700 jobs immediately after the hijackings threw the airline industry into a tailspin. Midway, which had 35 routes, also returned aircraft to lessors. Midway received the federal assistance after the bankruptcy court assured the Transportation Department it would be used to restart operations. Beginning Dec. 19, Midway said it will fly to Boston, New York-LaGuardia and Newark, New Jersey twice daily, with one morning round-trip and one evening round-trip from Raleigh/Durham International Airport. Round-trip service will be offered in Orlando, Tampa and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on a daily basis from Raleigh-Durham. Initial one-way fares to or from Raleigh-Durham will be $49 for travel from Dec. 19 through Jan. 6 and will be available on all seats on all flights. Between Jan. 7 and Feb. 10, the $49 fare will be available on a more restricted basis. |
