CNF Closes Emery World Airlines
CNF is shutting down its grounded Emery Worldwide Airlines business and consolidating three of its existing businesses into one. (12/6/2001) The shutdown will put about 90 people out of jobs in Dayton, Ohio, and about 40 more will lose their jobs in about six months, said CNF spokesman Jim Allen. There are about 11,000 people in the Emery organization, and about 2,000 people will continue to work in Dayton. The closing will result in a $200 million fourth-quarter charge, Allen said. In trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, shares of CNF were up 14 percent, or $3.72, to close at $28.72. The company also is consolidating its Menlo Logistics, Emery Worldwide and Vector SCM operations to form Menlo Worldwide, a single supply chain management service company. Menlo Worldwide is expected to have 15,000 employees and annual revenue of $3 billion. Emery Worldwide Airlines grounded its fleet Aug. 13 under pressure from the Federal Aviation Administration, after a series of inspections over 18 months found more than 100 federal violations. |

Another article that misinforms the public. Emery Worldwide is STILL in business and has not gone anywhere. It will still provide air and ground freight logisitics service. The only difference is that it is now under a conglomerate called Menlo Logistics. Emery Worldwide STILL flies. It was only grounded for a short period of time. Things will change within the carrier, but it has not disappeared. New operating procedures, new name, and new face, but it is still here.
CNF is a seperate subsidiary from Emery Worldwide. CNF will not resume its flight operations, but Emery Worldwide will. Straight from Emery's press department (makes more sense): "Effective immediately, this new CNF operating company, Menlo Worldwide, will have four operating divisions: Emery, Menlo Worldwide Logistics, Menlo Worldwide Technologies, and Vector SCM. Emery will continue to provide North America and International airfreight, ocean forwarding, customs brokerage and expedited services. The logistics programs at Emery will be combined with those already in existence at Menlo Logistics. In North America, Emery will still provide the same high levels of Next Day and Guaranteed services as in the past, and will continue to do so by using the contracted aircraft fleet it has operated so successfully since mid-August. CNF will not resume flight operations at Emery Worldwide Airlines, which is a separate subsidiary. As an Emery customer, you will see no change in our North America or International menu of services."

Yep, Emery is still at MHR. They are using a Tradewinds A-300 to Dayton.

Those of us in the know understand the original article I posted to mean that Emery's (the airline) fleet of DC-8's will sadly never fly again. There were talks until recently of Emery trying to regain their own operating certificate.
Obviously, this means that effort has failed. |

Emery Worldwide resumed air operations September the 14th after its short term grounding. A majority of the CNF contracted DC-8s have been stored in Roswell due to the restructuring of Consolidated Freightways and the congolmerate development. However, the air carrier certificate has always been under Emery Worldwide and still exists. Emery is still a working entity under Menlo, and will still be the designated operator of Menlo's air logisitics system. It will retain its certificate as it always has. Emery Worldwide still exists. The only change is CNF no longer will operate its part of Emery. It has handed the entire division into the Menlo conglomerate, which means good things for Emery bringing back its stored fleet.
Those of us in the know understand the article completely and see that it is not the end of Emery Worldwide, but a new beginning. "Emery, a division of Menlo Worldwide, consists of Emery’s international air and ocean forwarding, North American airfreight, customs brokerage and expedited services. It builds on Emery’s leading position in expedited freight shipping in North America and international forwarding services. Peter Quantrill, vice president of international operations and Eric Kirchner, vice president of North American operations, have been named executive vice presidents, reporting to Williford." Sounds good to me...

I am afraid you are incorrect Marc about FAR Part 121. Emery lost their "own" FAA operating cerificate in August and are not getting it back. This is the subject of the recent restructuring. In the past they had owned their aircraft and had other operators like Ryan International operate their aircraft under their certificates using Emery's name on the fuselage. However, Emery had obtained their own certificate to operate the DC8s and DC10s inhouse. All of their 727s were and continue to be operated by Ryan International. Now, the only way those DC10s and DC8s will ever fly again in Emery colors is to be operated by another airline such as Ryan. Yes, it is true Emery is still flying albeit with contract aircraft under the contractors cerificates and the limited 727 fleet in Emery colors under Ryan's certificate. Emery, CNF, etc no longer has a Part 121 certificate to run an inhouse airline as they were forced to relinquish it to the FAA back in August and will not reapply for one.

Emery still has limited authority for flight ops despite the CNF grounding in August. The DC-10 and MD-11 operations which are under WOA and GCO a/c certificates are manned by Emery crews, which requires official operating rights on both sides for a flight crew cannot officialy operate a flight without a certificate. Emery Worldwide is still registered as an air carrier, and still holds rights under ICAO and IATA, along with the DOT as a 121 carrier. Their 727 operation, although was under Ryan and Express One, was completely managed by Emery, not the later. The entire USPS air system was actually managed by Emery Worldwide before the collapse with the recent mail ammendments and FDX's entry into the market. The FAA grounding was not permanent for EWW resumed air operations with CNF on September 14th, although short lived due to the CNF restructuring plan which led to the demise of the domestic DC-8 network. Emery still has flight crews under their name, and still has a flight operations department (which will be restructured with Menlo). BAX Global is a prime example of a "carrier" which does not have its own 121 certificate and uses ATN as its primary contractor. ATN and KHA crews fly BAX Global's ops. Emery Worldwide still retains its own crews, on top of the joint work with GCO, WOA, LHN, and RYN.
As long as flights are filed under EWW, they still retain operating rights on a limited basis. But I do understand your statement Christian for the Emery Worldwide we know of is 99% extinct. I do see Menlo reviving that though for they do plan to go head to head with the big boys. On a brighter note, Kalitta Air started operating its first 727-200F this month. Slowly getting back to the norm... Nice to see Connie in the air again. Not too mention Southern Air Transport.

Another fine example of scum bag airline management. I am sure it will be included in Flying the Line Part 3.
